What is it?

Merchant category code is set by the acquirer for the special merchant. This API allows the inquiry of merchant type and merchant group type through merchant category code. Merchant code format is 15 digits, formed by institution code (3 digits) + area code (4 digits) + merchant category code (4 digits) + merchant sequence number (4 digits)。

Periodic Updates

This code refers to the internal standard of UnionPay. UnionPay international will maintain the code content and update it regularly.

Convenient Verification 

The merchant category comform to the real merchant type. Users can query whether the content of the merchant category code is consistent with the merchant's main business.


When to Use it?

It can be applied to user interface or user voucher, and is closely combined with the display scene of displaying code as string information.

Access Flow:

1. API Caller apply to use APIs

2. UPI approve application, update white list and generate key pair, then provide API Caller the public key and user ID (appID)


Call Flow:

3. API Caller uses the public key to encrypt the request message which include caller’s user identity information

4. UPI verify API Caller’s identity, decrypt request message, and return response data encrypted by using private key.

The interface returns the merchant categories details for a specified MCC.

Error Details errorDetail S 1-255 O:Optional “The Issuer response is time out.” It contains additional detail regarding the problem identified in the message. The information is only for debug purpose. It shall not be displayed to the user.
MCC Description mccDesc S 1-20 M:Mandatory “Wine manufacturer” The description of the MCC.
MCC Group mccGroup S 1-20 M:Mandatory “Agricultural Services” The group of the MCC.
